At least that's what this video promises. I actually learned a lot of words that I didn't know from this video and from asking some Iraqis all of these words are in common usage. I always like to make sure the words I'm learning are actually used. I used to flip through the Hans Wehr dictionary and memorize interesting words only to use them in conversation later and have the person I was talking to give me a blank stare. I stopped learning words from the dictionary after having this happen to me, say, a dozen times. Let's just say that the word مفلِّك doesn't seem to mean what good ole Hans Wher says it does.
As for the video, when I was watching it and I couldn't quite understand exactly what the meaning of a word was I just typed it into Google and looked at the images. For instance, I didn't know what a صنبور was so I typed it into Google and it gave me a bunch of pictures of water faucets. This method is really useful in learning a language, but sadly it's mostly only good for nouns and adjectives. If you search for abstract concepts the pictures aren't likely to help you with the meaning of the word.

However,in my opinion, it seems that it is very difficult to obtain a copy of this book unless you are in Egypt.
Once more they fail to include DVD with this book, same as( part 2).
Their first book( part 1 )with DVD was excellent in spite of has no second language input.
In comparison http://www.amazon.co.uk/Al-Kitaab-Fii-Tacallum-Al-cArabiyya-DVD/dp/158901149X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243418632&sr=1-2

Teaching Listening
Teaching Listening
NCLRC هذة المقالة مأخوذة من

Given the importance of listening in language learning and teaching, it is essential for language teachers to help their students become effective listeners. In the communicative approach to language teaching, this means modeling listening strategies and providing listening practice in authentic situations: those that learners are likely to encounter when they use the language outside the classroom.

Planning a Lesson/all language
Planning a Lesson
A key aspect of effective teaching is having a plan for what will happen in the classroom each day. Creating such a plan involves setting realistic goals, deciding how to incorporate course textbooks and other required materials, and developing activities that will promote learning. This section shows instructors how to carry out each of these steps.
An example lesson plan and lesson planning worksheet, available as pdf files, provide step-by-step guidance for lesson development. A supervisor observation worksheet allows supervisors to give specific feedback on a written lesson plan or an observed lesson.

Eastern Berber vocabularies on Google Books
Some digitised Eastern Berber vocabularies from the first half of the 18th 19th century for your perusal, if you're into that sort of thing. I was particularly impressed to find a Sokna vocabulary - I haven't yet read any other source on that language, though admittedly I haven't looked that hard.
* Lyon's vocabulary of the Berber of Sokna, from 1820
* Hornemann's vocabulary of Siwi, from 1798 (at my homepage)
* Caillaud's vocabulary of Siwi, from 1826
* Minutoli's vocabulary of Siwi, from 1827
* Koenig's vocabulary of Siwi, from 1839 (lots of other vocabularies in here - Somali, for example, and Nubian and even Fur)

Arabic Teachers Survey
Arabic Teachers Survey
Dear Friends,
Salamaat wa TaHiyyat. I hope that this message finds you well as you are getting ready for the summer. I wish you a very productive and enjoyable summer.
As teachers of Arabic, I would like to invite you all to participate in a survey of college-level teachers of Arabic in the US. The survey is part of study being conducted by Dr. Mahmoud Abdalla of Michigan State University, Ms. Dina Hosni of the University of Texas, and myself. The aim of this study is to:
1) understand the educational and linguistic background of teachers of Arabic in the US.2) Understand the programmatic contexts and conditions under which they teach.3) Explore some of their attitudes towards the teaching and learning of Arabic.4) Assess their professional needs.
Once the survey is done, we will analyze its results and present them to the field in the form of an article dealing with teacher preparation issues in Arabic. We seek to have the largest participation possible and we hope that you will accept our invitation and participate in the survey. The survey will be anonymous and will allow all teachers to express their views freely.
The survey will require about 25 minutes of your time to complete. We realize how busy you are, but we very much value your input and thank you in advance for taking the time to complete it.
You can access the survey at the following link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GtdumYmHzAtzUFZsI4q6pA_3d_3d
If possible, we would like to have your response by May 31st and hope that you will be able to spare us some time before then to take the survey. Please feel free to forward this survey to any colleagues at your institution.
Thank you again for helping us with the survey and we are looking forward to sharing the results with you soon.

Some Zenaga (Mauritanian Berber) words
Zenaga is the barely surviving Berber language of southwestern Mauritania around Boutilimit. Here are a few words I think are found only in Zenaga (and in some cases Tetserret), all from Taine-Cheikh. Unfortunately, I haven't found any really comprehensive dictionaries of (for example) Tashelhit, so I could well be wrong. If I am (as I was with agwəḍ), I'd love to hear it!
- ämkän "young herd animal (eg sheep, goat)" - p. 308
- ārwiy "scorpion" (< *arwəl) - p. 452
- täygaḌ "young she-goat" (< *talgaḍ) - p. 577
- agaḏ̣iy "Moor, bidani (white man)" - p. 181
- täššänḍuḌ "mirror" - p. 129
- taʔgaṛḏ̣aS "paper". (Other varieties have similar forms, but without any final s.) - p. 24
- tämärwuS "bride" (Ahaggar Tuareg has rwəs "to be in rut" - obviously related, but not quite the same sense!) - p. 451

Arabic Without Walls
Arabic Without Walls
Arabic Without Walls contains materials for three separate components broken down under the Course Content into Al-Kitaab, Interviews, and Culture. While each component may stand by itself and therefore may be studied independently, the three are designed to complement each other in Arabic Without Walls. The course syllabus will help you go back and forth between the textbooks, the DVDs, and the Web materials as you proceed in a given chapter. For review purposes, however, or when you choose to concentrate on a single element of the Web-based course, you will find it useful to go to Course Content and select the relevant component.
